PROJECT: The design and creation of an Entrance Room at the local school
DATE: 2015
In an ongoing development of school environments with the Hjallastefna, an independent school system in Iceland, we launched part one of this Interior Design project. The entrance to the school was transformed with use of natural and recycled materials to embrace the children with a dynamic and yet calm interior. As is our way we used the existing elements like the shelving to a degree by re-painting them and timber cladding. A wall mural showing their surroundings, created by the children was transformed into a more three dimensional, earthy visual to meet the new bench. wall claddings and hangers.
The natural cork serves the area both aesthetically as well as being a pin up board and a sound insulator/dampener. Recycled timber was mostly found at a local farm as well as coming from our own supply. Flooring Lino was used to colour parts of the walls and yet again it assists in dampening the inherent volume created by the population of a school.
Slices as well as whole sections of Lark grown in the East of Iceland, brought the essence and energy of the trees into the environment, which we believe has an inherent ´supporting´effect on the human spirit.
